MOVABLE PARTS: 2001-2009

Everything looks beautiful and makes sense from a distance. From an airplane, all the houses neatly aligned with the bright blue circles in the back of the houses. The swimming pools. And yet, how could it be when you walk on ground and turn the corner on a city street that everything can get so tangled and chaotic?

In Movable Parts Ms. Elkayam explores identity and legacy of her own America. Her mother's family came to America in the late '50s after immigrating to Israel in 1947 from a Displaced Persons camp in Germany. Her father left Morocco in the late '50s and immigrated to Israel before moving to America in 1967.   Each painting with its loose geometry, bright colors, and layering is a mental GPS to navigate through a dialogue of tradition, modernity and what is her own meaningful legacy in America. through the everyday.
